New Orleans Religion: Culture Vs. Commercial
New Orleans is a place with a heavy religious influence. Part of it is due to the history of the city. There are many institutions that are rooted in religion. Also, since New Orleans is known for religion there is a large aspect that is geared toward encouraging tourism in the city. Although there are many churches, synagogues, and other places of worship there is also a huge commercialized aspect of religion such as Voodoo. Typically, in the right start of mind it is easy to differentiate the commercialized religion and the true culture of religion. For example most voodoo in the French Quarter with a gift shop is obviously a tool of tourism. Also though, in the midst of the tourism of the French Quarter there is Saint Louis Cathedral which has historical and religious significance. It is the oldest continuously practicing cathedral in the United States. So although religion is used to increase tourism it is also a large aspect of the New Orleans culture.
