Voodoo and Commercialism in the Big Easy Part 2

Voodoo and Commercialism in the Big Easy   Part 2

This is the second part of the post I made yesterday morning regarding the sale of "authentic" voodoo merchandise in New Orleans and if it has any relevance to the actual religion. Earlier today, (I said yesterday but I got distracted) I made my way to Royal St. where my Google maps app told me was a concentration of voodoo stores. Traffic was horrible due to the beginning of the Mardi Gras celebrations but eventually, I made my way to Reverend Zombie's House of Voodoo.

Upon entering the store I examined what appeared to be an altar with burnt candles
with a sign that read “DO NOT TOUCH.”
Looking around I found the store to be densely packed with eclectic jewelry, carvings of skulls and African masks. There were also items I was familiar with, including crucifixes and statues of St. Joseph and Mary. While I felt that many of these objects had some sort of religious value, most of the items in the store seemed like worthless pieces of memorabilia designed for over- enthusiastic tourists.

I learned from my visit to the Voodoo store that the value of the objects sold depends upon the beliefs of the individual.
As for me, I don’t believe that this key chain will give me the advantage of magic over my adversaries but I like the aesthetic value it adds to my key ring.
