King Zulu 1949

King Zulu 1949

The Krewe of Zulu, one of the biggest and most popular krewes of the New Orleans Mardi Gras festivities, has quite a long and interesting story. I found this article from the Krewe of Zulu website that explains their origins and history in detail.

While doing a little research however, I found an interesting picture of one of the most famous kings of Zulu; Louis Armstrong. According to an article in the Time Picayune, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong reigned as the King of Zulu on March 3rd, 1949.

Armstrong, often referred to as "the city's favorite son" spoke out against racial injustice, revolutionized jazz, and preserved New Orleans's vibrant culture through his music.

Another picture of the king found on this website.
