Mardi Gras Bones
New Orleans is filled with many different rituals and traditions. Everyone has heard of the babydolls and the Mardi Gras indians. Yet, not so many people know or have seen the Skulls and Bones gang that roam the city (especially Treme area) waking people from their rest to welcome Mardi Gras. They wear homemade, full-body costumes (that they created from cheap items) to scare adults and children. They use real bones to bang on tamborines as their boisterous apperance. It is really unexpected to find any members of these gangs and one can rarely see them practice. "The Bone Gang does their [training] privately. Sunpie [a current member and chief] says it’s part of the mystery of the organization, one that had almost died out before he became Chief.". Two of these members made an appearance in Loyola University yesterday and explained their traditions and ideas. In case you did not get a chance to see them, visit the Loyola website or this other website for more information about this curious group.
