Veves and Voodoo

Veve for Oggun

The Veves are a popular art form in Haitian and New Orleanian Voodoo used to represent the Lwa during rituals and portray them in everyday life. Each Lwa has his or her own unique veve, although certain regions have different veves for the same Lwa. During voodoo rituals, the veves are drawn on the ground using chalk or strewn with a powdery substance like flour or cornmeal, and offerings are placed upon them. The main purpose of the veves is to bring the lwa down to earth in order to participate directly in the ritual. The ability to draw veves correctly is a prized skill for new initiates into voodoo and the more correctly they are drawn, the more powerful they are believed to be.
