The creation of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival
gave jazz musicians a way to constantly get gigs. It was founded in 1970. A
ticket cost $3. Before the festival bands could only become big through bar
gigs. The first band they booked, Snooks, was a street performer. The proceeds
from the festival go towards the non-profit The Jazz and Heritage Foundation.
The Foundation organizes many free events and programs year-round that help preserve
New Orleans’s music tradition.
