Tauro Synagogue Overview

Tauro Synagogue is a reform Jewish synagogue located on St. Charles Street founded in 1828 ( it is descended from the sixth oldest synagogue in the country) and headed by Rabbi Alexis Berk. The current day congregation is a combination of two older congregations, one founded by Jewish settlers from Germany and the other, a Spanish-Portuguese synagogue made up mostly of Sephardic Jews from South America. While the synagogue contains a large and ornate sanctuary, most Shabbat services are held in a small chapel off to the side of the building. Tauro also holds special Shabbat services on holidays and they are famous for their Jazz Festival Shabbat. The synagogue supports a small Jewish education school from pre-kindergarten to the tenth grade as well as various community assistance projects such as the Desmond Project and the St. Bernard Project.
