Catholicism and the community

My religion class touched on this a bit but after Katrina, St. Augustine Church, was constantly in trouble with the catholic church. They claim to be the first church established by free people of color. Most locals do not dispute that or do not care enough to dispute it. After Hurricane Katrina their building was greatly damaged and they lost many members. The diocese chose to close the church even though St. Augustine was a large force in rebuilding the community. The church had volunteers come in and protest their closure. In fact, these protesters circled my parents one night after my father wrote an unpleasant article about them. They even called my father the devil. Eventually St. Augustine made a plan with the diocese to fix their problems. They were taken off of probation in 2009.

I think that it's interesting that no matter how much you do for the community, all the Catholic church sees is lack of money. But I also think that when you sign up to be a Catholic church you know what you are getting into. It is a business. You have to have marriages, funerals and other money making endeavors. If you just want to help the community then be a community center, not a church.
