Voodoo and Commercialism in The Big Easy

Voodoo and Commercialism in The Big Easy

This afternoon I'm planning on taking a visit to the French Quarter. Since I have a car, it's quite easy for me to take regular excursions to different parts of the Greater New Orleans area. This time however, I’m planning on making a special visit to a couple of the Voodoo markets and stores in the area. The reason being is that Jason Berry in The Spirit of Black Hawk turned my attention towards the commercial side of the voodoo religion when he describes Jules Anderson’s open admission of making a fortune selling statues of Black Hawk as well as selling candles after the ceremony.

See the website for this image here.

This leads me to ask, “Just how commercial is voodoo?” Even more, are the items sold relevant to the actual religion or merely trinkets of a stigmatized New Orleans pop culture? Either way I can’t wait to find out!
