Wetlands: Problems and Solutions

The problem of wetlands not naturally restoring themselves came to be in 1927. This year the city flooded and its citizens asked for protection. Thus, the Army Corps of Engineers came up with the solutions of man made levees to control and direct the river. At this point they did not know that their means for protection would harm them with time to come.

The rivers natural change of flow and occasional flooding replaced the lost wet lands with the sedimentary deposits. Since the river no longer releases the deposits the wetlands are depleting and are unable to be restored.

The wetlands act as storm buffers during hurricanes; weakening the storm before it hits mainland.

There are other problems with depleting wetlands too. Read more about it here .

The solution for coastal restoration is dependent on more scientific research. Individuals can help by donating. Here you can find more detailed means of wetland restoration.

Also, too see how quickly we are losing wetlands check out the America's Wetland Foundation's webpage. There you can find more information about wetland protection and restoration.
